NEN 1010 for EV chargers: key points for installers

A practical checklist for protection, residual current, diversity and handover of AC and DC charging infrastructure.

NEN 1010 for EV chargers: key points for installers

Start with the current standard and local rules

NEN 1010 sets the Dutch requirements for safe low-voltage installations. Section 7-722 is especially relevant to charge points. Always check the current edition, grid operator requirements and instructions for the selected Autel model. In Belgium, the AREI or RGIE and inspection body requirements apply.

A dedicated circuit and suitable residual current protection

Give each charge point, or each group disconnected together, separate overcurrent and residual current protection. Match the type and sensitivity to the unit’s built-in DC fault detection and product documentation. Do not automatically fit type B when the manufacturer specifies another compliant solution.

Power, diversity and load balancing

Size the installation for the available connection and expected charging profile. Dynamic load balancing can limit current while the building needs more power, but it does not replace correct cable and protection calculations. Record configured limits and the measurement location in the handover file.

Inspection and handover file

Check the protective conductor, insulation, disconnection times, phase sequence, communications and a complete charging session. Include single-line diagram, cable calculation, settings, serial numbers and measurements. Have the installation assessed under the rules applying at the location.
